Cheap Eats in the CBD (all under $10)

Well we all know the price of food is at an all time high, but fear not, there are still some places around the city offering tasty bites for a score. These are all filling snack/light meal options for less than $10 that you can find within Auckland CBD (and are delicious!).

Mighty Hotdog

Korean style hot dogs are all the rage at the moment and for good reason, they sure make for a delicious snack. What’s not to love about deep fried sausages filled with cheese and dipped in sugar. I always get the same one here, the ‘Mighty Kumara’ for $7. The crunchy bits of kumara on the outside really make this a unique hot dog. All of their small hot dogs are $5-10 and if you’re feeling hungry grab some golden potato fries ($5) too.

Matsu Sushi

This place is a bit of a hidden gem, they’re located in Victoria Park and do some amazing Japanese food. Their sushi rolls are $1.50-$3 each and I honestly think their sushi is the freshest, best quality in the city (even if you’re getting them late in the day!). The Spicy Katsu Chicken roll has the tastiest sauce and I also recommend the Spicy Prawn Katsu and Beef rolls - they’re more filling than you think!

Best Ugly Bagels

Best Ugly Bagels are probably not what you’d first think of when it comes to cheap eats in Auckland, so you might be surprised that there are 8 options on the menu here for less than $10. I had the Peanut Butter & Raspberry Jam ($9.90) one the other day and not only was it 10x better than what I would make at home, it was also super filling.

For the chocolate lovers, highly recommend ordering ‘Koko’ ($8.90) which comes with house chocolate, almond, hazelnut & cashew spread. I’m craving it just thinking about it! These guys are definitely worth checking out for a quick breakfast/lunch and really hit the spot if you’re feeling like a satisfying New York style bagel.

Mr Katsu

The Chicken Katsu Donburi here is only $10 and worth every dollar. The portion size is generous with lots of chicken katsu given and if you can’t decide between noodles or rice for a base, they will happily make half and half for you. I haven’t tried the sushi rolls here yet but from memory they were about $7 for a pack (8 pieces) which is some of the most affordable sushi in the city. Service here is very friendly and quick and they’re conveniently located 1 or 2 minutes walk from the Skytower.

Yuan Taste

And we’re moving onto sweets. Located in Strand Arcade, Yuan Taste specialises in Taiwanese traditional cakes. I had one of their freshly baked egg tarts ($5) the other day and don’t know why it took me this long to try it. I’m no egg tart expert but for me personally it was the best I’ve ever had (in terms of sweetness + texture). They offer a variety of individual cake slices, such as marble sponge, coffee and walnut sponge, chocolate mousse, coconut cheesecake etc. They’re all less than $10 so it’s a nice and cheap something sweet in a convenient location off Queen Street.

Find them at Mid City shop 19/239 Queen Street, Auckland CBD
